As an artist, you know that it is important to develop a brand. It will be useful for when you are marketing yourself and your music. It’s the way the public identifies you and tells you apart from other artists. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that a brand is just a name and a logo. But the truth is, it’s everything. And in this article I will help you create a brand for you or your band.

The first thing you need to do is identify your music. Because after all, you are a musician and your music is your product. Now, let me ask you this. How would you describe your music? What is your genre? I know, sometimes as an artist, you don’t want to be put in a box. Choosing a genre feels so limiting, especially if you draw inspirations from many different styles of music. But putting a label on your music will help people recognize it. If you don’t know where to start, try looking at the artists that heavily influence your music, and see how they describe their sound and genre. Chance is, your music might be similar to theirs. So you can use them as an example, and you can adjust accordingly.

Okay, you know your music. What’s next? Well, you need to determine your target audience. Who is the majority of people that would enjoy your music? I know it is tempting to say that your music is for everyone, every gender, every age, everywhere. But that won’t help with your brand. Marketing to ten-year-olds is totally different to marketing to sixty-year-olds. Knowing exactly who your biggest audience is can help you make a lot of brand decisions. And this doesn’t mean that your music can’t be listened to by people outside your target audience. It’s just to make things easier for the next step.

Alright, we have your music and your target audience. Now it’s time to build your brand. Think, what’s unique about you and your music? Maybe you are a classical musician who likes to dress up in a goth outfit. Or you are a metalhead who writes religious songs. Or maybe you are an EDM artist who produces songs about mental health for kids. That’s your brand. Combined with your music and target audience, you can easily determine your stage name, the color of your logo, how you would dress, the fonts for your website, your stage acts, and so much more.

With a solid brand, you can introduce yourself to new fans who will love you not just for your music, but for everything you are. And when that happens, they are willing to listen to your songs, buy tickets to your show, and celebrate all of your achievements. Isn’t it great? So, start building your brand, and I can’t wait to see how it will help you with your music career.
