Power. That is the word that I can think of when I hear this band. Five Alarm Funk is a Vancouver-based band that’s been making the world dance for two decades. In fact, they are about to start their 20th Anniversary Tour. And of course, Vancouver will be their first stop.
Five Alarm Funk is a funk band that is made out of high-skilled musicians. The members of the band include Tayo Branston (drums and vocals), Tom Towers (congas and vocals), Kent Wallace (trumpet), Jimmy Baldwin (guitar), Gabe Boothroyd (guitar), Tim Parent (bass), Brent Mah (tenor saxophone), Mike Allen (baritone saxophone), and Ben Kaplan (keyboard). With Tayo Branston as the band leader, Five Alarm Funk has released seven albums and has been nominated for two Juno Awards. And if you listen to their music, you can see why.
With such a big group, you can expect a lot of energy. The bold trumpet and bright saxophones make up a strong brass section that gives their music a punch. At the same time, the quick conga, funky guitar, and upbeat drums gives you a groove that guarantees to make you dance. The band called their music Punk Funk, and I can definitely see why. It’s not just your regular funk music. As I mentioned before, this band has power, and that is what makes their music hits hard. There is no weak link in the band as each member plays their part very tightly. You can definitely tell that they have been making music together for a long time. As a result, they created a neat, thick, and uniquely impactful sound.
Five Alarm Funk has been on many tours across North America, and they have also performed in several other countries including Taiwan, Mexico, and Mali. In all of their performances, you can expect an epic amount of fun. In addition to their energetic performance, Five Alarm Funk loves to include wild costumes, fun props, and dynamic choreography. Their engaging performance will excite you until the very last song.
