If you are an independent musician, you know that making music costs money. Yes, you know that you can record your whole album in your bedroom, but that does not mean that it won’t cost anything. You might be in the middle of recording your single, and you realize that a guitar solo might add a nice touch to your song. So, you decide to hire a guitar player. That cost money. You finish mixing your song, and now it needs to be mastered by a professional engineer. That cost money. You release your album, and now you need to go on tour to promote it. That cost money. I can go on, but you get the idea. When you are serious about your music, you need to spend money. But what if you simply don’t have it? Well, one of the solutions is to get a grant.
A grant is a fund given by a person or organization for a specific purpose. One of the best things about grants is you do not need to pay them back. There are different kinds of grants that independent musicians can apply for, including grants for demos or albums, live performances, tours, career development, and even grants to start a music company. In BC, there are several organizations that you can check out if you are interested in applying for a grant, including Music BC, Creative BC, and British Columbia Arts Council. Each organization gives different kinds of grants, so you might need to do research to find the one that fits your needs.

Now, applying for a grant might be a bit more complicated than just filling out a form. You have to make them believe that you deserve that grant. And you also have to stand out among all the other applicants who also want the grant. To have a better chance of getting a grant, you need to impress them with yourself and your project. That means that you need to gather all the materials that would support your application. Make sure you have a killer bio that includes your past works and achievements. If you are applying for a recording grant, explain your project in detail, including how it will sound like and who will be involved. If you are applying for a tour grant, be sure to know the budget and how many cities you are planning to visit. With so many things to prepare, I suggest you allow some time to apply and not leave it until the very last minute.
Good luck on applying for the grants, and please note that you might not get it on the first try. Don’t give up, many artists actually need a few submissions before landing their first grant. Learn from each application, and keep trying. It will be worth it in the end.
