Meet Vancouver’s own singer-songwriter, Nat Jay. With years of professional music experience under her belt, her music is loved by many, including film and TV producers worldwide. In fact, you might have heard her music in some of your favorite shows, including The Hills (MTV), Men in Trees (ABC), Heartland (CW), Continuum (Syfy), Botched (E!), The Perfect Bride (Hallmark), The Astronauts (Nickelodeon), Tiny Pretty Things (Netflix), and many more.
Nat Jay was raised in a classical household. She studied the flute at the University of British Columbia, and after she graduated, she began her songwriting journey. She started with writing in the genre of pop-folk with her guitar. Throughout her music career, she collaborated with many musicians and producers, including Winston Hauschild, Ovidiu “Ovi” Bistriceanu, and Stephen Bishop. As a result, her sound shifted to commercial electropop.

Nat Jay’s latest project is her new album, “Turns Out It’s Not The End”. She released her first single “Just Kids” on September 15, 2023. This is a perfect collaboration between Jay and music producer, Ovi Bistriceanu. You can definitely hear the marriage between the acoustic guitar and the electropop influence, especially on the drum sound. Jay’s pop voice is soft and measured, but the way it was layered and enhanced with effects made it sound futuristic. The song talks about a past relationship that someone had back when they were young. Its mid tempo makes it a good song to chill after a long day.
One month after the first single of her new album reached the public, Nat Jay released her second single called “Feel Sad” on October 13, 2023. Unlike Just Kids, this is a more up-tempo song. Even though this song is about a heartbreak, its positive vibe gives those who are sad a permission to dance. The lyric “If you want to feel sad, feel sad” is so relatable to people who are grieving over the end of a relationship. The electropop influence is more prominent in this song, especially with the marriage between the synth and the electric drum.

With her new album that is coming at the end of the year, Nat Jay puts her struggles into music form, turning pain into something beautiful. Jay proved herself to be a skilled and thoughtful topline writer (lyrics + melody). And with the support of Ovi’s innovative and futuristic vision, “Turns Out It’s Not The End” will be a perfect album to end this year and to welcome 2024.
